Concord RecordsZZ Top front man Billy Gibbon‘s long-awaited debut solo project, Perfectamundo, hits retailers today, and the singer is ready to take the new music on the road.
Billy Gibbons and The BFGs will launch the tour with a Nov. 17 appearance on Conan, where they’ll delivera performance of Roy Head‘s 1965 hit, “Treat Her Right.” The band’s tour will commence in Fort Lauderdale Nov. 27 and take the band all the way to Cuba for the Havana Jazz Festival, a show that Gibbons said fits the outing.
“The repertoire on [Perfectamundo], including ‘Treat Her Right,’ invites the band to bring it forward live and in person,” says Gibbons. “The prospect of taking it to Cuba in December is especially exciting…talk about wish fulfillment.”
Gibbons was inspired to record an Afro-Cuban record after he was invited to perform at the 2014 Havana Jazz Festival. He couldn’t attend, but still soaked up as much Cuban music as possible, and created his BFG band with his friend, pianist Martin Guigui. The group added organist Mike Flanigan, vocalist-bassist Alex Garza and drummer Greg Morro to the mix. All musicians — including guitarist Gary Moon — contributed to the recording of Perfectamundo, which was co-produced by Joe Hardy.
